"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain
Mark Twain is a true literary explorer. The phrase “throw off the bowlines” helps me picture myself in the Caribbean blue waters. I'm on a boat with the wind in my hair, the smell of the salt air, the sun on my face and focused on sailing my heart out with my friends. The imagery is strong, it’s as if I’m a born sailor! (note: I get sea sick!) What do you see yourself doing if you threw off the bowlines and set sail?
Do you have an inkling to explore a new industry? Are you trying to land a role in a different part of the company you are in? Have you been thinking about how to make a big transition to fulfill your life’s purpose?
Regret is a wasteful energy. What do you want to achieve? What are you sailing towards?
1. For a full 7 days write (old school pen and paper) or type (any note app on your phone) a list of things you do that energize you. Write down everything that lifts your spirits. Every little thing. Do this for a full 7 days so you see patterns during a work week and on the weekends.
2. What themes emerge? Jot those down.
3. That list will help you define your next step. Explore. Dream. Discover
